1887 N175 Type 2 Gypsy Queen John Ward (Pose #478-5) SGC 50 VG/EX 4 - Only Two Graded Examples! One of the rarest 19th Century baseball card issues is a stylish cousin of the N172 Old Judge series designated as N175 for Goodwin & Company's "Gypsy Queen" brand. Issued in two varieties - there is the standard rarity sized the same as the N172 counterparts. Then there is the second version which are all but impossible to acquire as so few exist. It was just in May 2020 that Heritage Auctions had the chance to present our very first N175-2 featuring California Brown which auctioned for $13,800.00. These relics may be "super size" but they also leave a super thirst for those looking to quench their desire of adding one to their collection.

The influence of John Ward on baseball is undeniable. Ward excelled at both shortstop and pitcher during his 17-season Major League career. It was Ward who set a precedent that Babe Ruth would later follow by starting out as a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher and later converting to a position allowing for daily play. Ward led the National League circuit with 47 wins with Providence Grays in 1879 and in 1887 led the league in stolen bases as a member of the New York Giants. The second perfect game in the history of professional baseball in 1880 with ward on the mound. Off the field, his tremendous influence was felt as he organized the Players' Brotherhood, the first baseball players union, and formed the short-lived Players League in 1890.

Our offered treasure is pose #478-5 - Throw, r/hand cap high, R/profile. Caption: JOHN WARD, S. S., N. Y's. Grade: SGC 50 VG/EX 4 (One of only two examples total found on the SGC/PSA census reports). Photo Quality: Very Good.
