    Description

1887 N172 Old Judge John Ward SGC 40 VG 3 - Exceptional Portrait. The influence of John Ward on baseball is undeniable. Ward excelled at both shortstop and pitcher during his 17-season Major League career. It was Ward who set a precedent that Babe Ruth would later follow by starting out as a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher and later converting to a position allowing for daily play. Ward led the National League circuit with 47 wins with Providence Grays in 1879 and in 1887 led the league in stolen bases as a member of the New York Giants. The second perfect game in the history of professional baseball in 1880 with ward on the mound. Off the field, his tremendous influence was felt as he organized the Players' Brotherhood, the first baseball players union, and formed the short-lived Players League in 1890. Offered is his portrait pose (#478-1) and what an exceptional portrait it is. The card is graded SGC 40 VG 3 although the card has quality corners and is close to perfectly centered. A moisture stain as seen on the reverse accounts for the grade but most may feel that is conservative. Image quality is an unequivocal "Mint 9."
