1886 Tomlinson Studios Deacon White Cabinet Photo. Patience is a virtue. For fans of "Deacon" White it took almost 125 years from his retirement to be honored with a place in Cooperstown. Why it took so long is unknown considering White was one of the premier players of early baseball with stats that established him as one of his era's finest stars. His career began at the infancy of professional ball in 1871 and lasted for two decades. As a backstop, White caught more games in the 1870s than any other, and this was the era where there was no protective equipment. He was an integral part of five consecutive pennant winning teams from 1873 to 1877 with Boston and Chicago. He was the first batter for the newly formed professional National Association. In 1887 White racked up 136 hits, batting .303 for the World Champion Detroit Wolverines. He is a lifetime .312 hitter who amassed 988 RBIs, second only to Cap Anson. When he retired he was in the top ten all-time leader in career total chances at third base, career games, at bats, hits and total bases, assists, putouts and double plays.

Offered is a very rare Tomlinson Studios cabinet card of Deacon in a full-figure batting pose surrounded by an outdoor scene of flowers and trees. This format matches an 1886 Wolverines team photo produced by Tomlinson. We know the photo session happened in April of 1886. This piece pre-dates the N172 Old Judge series making this his rookie debut. The presented 6-3/8" x 4-1/4" cabinet has a mount that shows some overall obverse soiling, the reverse shows some soiling, spot stains and an area of moisture stains and surface loss. The photo has some surface wear and a few small spots of loss. The portrait has remained strong with a full range of tones and fine details.
