1875 Prescott & White CDV Hartford Dark Blues SGC 20 FR 1.5 - With Candy Cummings! This very rare Hartford Dark Blues or Blue Stockings CDV dates to 1875 and features one of the more significant players of the 19th century-Candy Cummings. Cummings (back row, center) is given credit for inventing the curve ball and most believe this pitching technique earned him a place in Cooperstown. Images of Cummings are almost non-existent with this CDV standing alone as the only photo of Cummings taken during his baseball career. Although the team finished in second that year, Candy had a fantastic season going 35-12 and an impressive 1.60 ERA. The team is posed in full uniform with a few holding a tool of their trade, caps are dispersed in front as decoration. The image is special and possibly a unique one-of-a-kind photo variation. We are aware of only three '75 Blues CDVs being offered at auction or in private hands. Images of two were available and both had the same photo style - players were seen in front of a lifeless blank backdrop. This image clearly shows the team posed inside a very elegant room or meeting hall. This photo is certainly more regal in appearance than the bland background counterparts. As best as we can determine this is the only copy with this photo treatment. The photo surface is mint. The image detail is crisp, finely detailed and shows a full range of value from light to very dark, a testament to smart storage away from the natural light. The thin card mount is 4-1/8" x 2-7/16" with no other obverse faults, the hand cut photo (as are all of them) measures 3-1/4" x 2-5/16." The blank, flat black reverse surface has one area of surface loss and a faint pencil "925 (?)" notation. The bottom area shows a faint but completely legible "Prescott & White" and "Hartford" gold stamping identifying the photographer and studio location. One surface pull away and pencil mark away from being quite possibly the finest example available, with a unique photo treatment as well.
