1872 CDV Boston Red Sox Cal McVey SGC Authentic - From the George Wright Collection. Cal McVey was an unsung hero and integral part of the Boston Red Stockings' success in 1872 when they went 39-8 winning what would be the first four consecutive pennants. The anchor of this early dynasty was brothers George and Harry Wright. McVey was involved in professional sports from 9 seasons as player and/or manager. In 1872 Cal played in 46 games and batted an impressive .321. This cabinet card comes from the personal collection of George Wright, at one time serving as part of a display which imaged 11 members of the Red Stockings team. The cabinet photo of Ross Barnes and the original matte are being offered elsewhere in this auction. The image of McVey in formal attire is free of creasing, wrinkles and surface scratches. Slight toning has made visible is the oval shape which was the open area visible through the matte board. The bottom right corner was purposely clipped to accommodate the preceding player cabinet card. Corner clip aside, the photo shows sharp detail and a pleasing range of contrast. The card mount displays roughness on the reverse from said mounting. It is also worth noting the image was taken by the renown Warren Studios of Boston, Mass.
