1872 Boston Red Stockings CDV Harry Wright SGC Authentic - From the George Wright Collection. William Henry "Harry" Wright has been involved in baseball from the dawning era of the sport. The value of his contributions as player, manager and architect of the game are incalculable. It was his style of play which set the ground work for the rules of modern day baseball. With his brother, Harry played professional ball at the National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) where his relationship to the national game was forged. It would be a bond which would never be broken. Wright was the cornerstone of the first professional baseball team-the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings. His passion for the game went beyond his own play as Wright was the first to formulate strategies of play which are taken for granted today. Wright's role was as manger and general manger of his team. As a manager, he took his team to six league championships and posted a .581 winning percentage. Both Harry and his brother George are members of both the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. This cabinet card comes from the personal collection of George Wright. At one time it served as part of a display which depicted 11 members of the Red Stockings team. The photo is in amazing condition considering it is 137 years old. No creases, no tears. There is some slight image darkening limited to the outer regions from adhesive. Slight toning has made visible is the oval shape which was the open area visible through the original matte. Unlike every other example we have encountered this treasure is fully intact with all four corners intact. Others had a corner or two purposely clipped to accommodate another player photo. The image shows very sharp detail and a full range of values. The reverse surface shows a little roughness from said mounting. The image was taken at the Warren Studios of Boston, Mass. This CDV offers one of the finest images available of the baseball pioneer. Encapsulated "Authentic" by SGC, with note to its special provenance.
