1869 CDV Cincinnati Red Stockings (Team Line-Up-Reverse) SGC 10 Poor 1. The 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings are the first squad of professional (paid to play) baseball players. The team was led by brothers George and Harry Wright and marked a pivotal event in the evolution of our National Pastime. Between May and November of 1869, this assembly of ten men would travel thousands of miles leaving devastation in their wake with a season that closed with a perfect 57-0 record. Any carte-de-visite (CDV) of any subject matter from the late 1860's is rare as the medium of photography was itself within the first decades of its development. These pieces represent the first instances of mass producing images for promotion for a growing society. Considering this first professional team was still a novel concept, their monumental impact on the game and eventually society as a whole was hardly predictable. The precious few examples known today are treasured additions for even the most advanced hobbyists. This striking image of the 1869 team is now iconic in the hobby. Issued just four years after General Lee surrendered his Confederate troops at the Appomattox Courthouse, this trade card in part helped begin a tradition now over 140 years old.

Graded SGC 10 Poor 1. More "common" trade cards that advertise Peck & Snyder products are represented by fifteen recorded entries on the SGC census. The 3-15/16 x 2-7/16" CDV variety, one that displays a 10-man line-up on the reverse, shows just six total submissions. For the sports enthusiast or history buff, this is truly a historical and relevant entry to the hobby and to our National Pastime.
