    Description

"One of a Kind" Early 20th Century Original Hand Drawn Baseball Card Set (539 Total Pieces). You won't find this set in any guidebook, and while we suspect this remarkable creation could have been an unrealized prototype for a prospective retail product, it is also possible that this was simply a devoted baseball fan's labor of love. Its singularity is only part of its charm, however, as the more than 500 cards hand drawn by published musician and early Chicago Cubs fan Otto Starnitzke exhibit an artistic sensitivity and, often, a sense of humor that perfectly captures the rough and tumble spirit of the Dead Ball Era.

There are 140 different player cards including all of the greats, both famous and infamous, of the era like Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Tris Speaker, Napoleon Lajoie, Christy Mathewson, Chief Bender, Roger Bresnahan, Hal Chase, M. Brown, Honus Wagner and yes, Tinker, Evers and Chance. There are 399 additional cards devoted to baseball terms, stats and plays paired with some serious, and some comically illustrated, interpretations. Dates on the pieces tell us they were created circa 1910-1913. All are approximately 2-3/16" x 3-1/8" in size. The cards were originally found in his granddaughter's attic protected by the 11" x 5" x 2-1/4" Hayley's Chocolates wood box which is also included. An added bonus is an approximately 4 x 5" sepia photo of our baseball fan/musician/artist (seated left playing the mandolin) next to an unnamed musician friend.

The cards survive in remarkable EX-MT condition, at a level which would certainly command many tens of thousands of dollars for a recognized baseball issue of this age and breadth. While we cannot be so bold as to rate this offering as an equivalent to the T206 issue, we do expect considerable interest among collectors with a concentration in early twentieth century trading cards. This remarkable offering makes its hobby debut here, and one could reasonably expect this first chance at ownership will likewise be the last.
