    Description

Signed 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente #164 Rookie PSA/DNA Auto 8. He lived a hero of Pittsburgh and died a hero of Nicaragua, his body forever lost at sea following the crash of his overloaded earthquake relief plane in the coastal waters of his native Puerto Rico. Already guaranteed baseball immortality through his eighteen brilliant seasons of Major League service and his newly-minted key to the 3,000 Hit Clubhouse, Roberto Clemente achieved the closest thing to baseball sainthood that tragic last day of 1972, his martyrdom in service to others arguably the most noble death in the history of our national pastime.

This extraordinarily important and desirable relic finds the iconic outfielder in the earliest days of his fame, one of the two key rookie cards (Sandy Koufax being the other) from the groundbreaking 1955 Topps Baseball issue. While the card itself is an admittedly mid-grade example, it is the blue ink signature applied by the subject that historic debut season earns every fraction of its NM-MT 8 rating. It's also important to stress that this is a period signature, as most of the representations traded in the hobby today are the later, more free-flowing format.

Only eight examples of this signed rookie appear within the PSA/DNA population, none equal or superior to this specimen. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC Authentic.
