1892 A.G. Mills Signed Imperial Cabinet Photograph, PSA/DNA NM-MT 8. A Civil War veteran who took his bat and ball with him on his tour of duty and participated in a famous 1862 Christmas Day baseball game between two Union military regiments, Abraham Gilbert Mills was a lawyer by trade who went on to become an important and influential figure in professional baseball and American sports between 1871 and 1929.

He was a president/player for the 1871-72 Washington Olympics; an instrumental figure in the founding of the National League in 1876; an N.L. umpire in 1877 (albeit for only one game); the third president of the National League (1883-84); authored the 1883 National Agreement between the National League, American Association, and Northwestern League to respect one another's player contracts and provided for the first championship series (1884 World Series between the N.L. and A.A. champions); president of the Mills Commission, which was set up to look into the origins of baseball and erroneously concluded in 1908 that Abner Doubleday had invented the game in Cooperstown, New York in 1939; president of the prestigious New York Athletic Club; authored the American Olympic Constitution; and was involved in planning the 1932 Winter Olympics.

This stunning Imperial cabinet photograph (16.75x10.25") pictures Mills in full regalia as commander of the Lafayette Post. The back is inscribed and signed, very large and bold, in 10/10 black fountain pen "Yours faithfully, A.G. Mills, Comdr Lafayette Post, Sept 22/92." Also, the photo credit "Brady Wash. D.C." appears at the front lower left. The image has wonderful clarity and contrast. There are four tiny pinholes at the corners of the photo, some light water stains on the mount, tape remnants on back, and light overall wear. However, none of these minor imperfections interfere with the overall brilliance of the image or the inscription and autograph. The best known signed photograph of Mills and a very rare autograph. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, NM-MT 8.
