1972 Chicago Cubs Signed Color Caricatures and Original Art Lot of Nine. Certainly one of the most distinctive baseball card issues you'll ever find, this high-quality creation from 40 years ago employed a museum-worthy card stock to produce a unique eight-card set of 11-by-14-inch cards that in this instance are also neatly autographed, handsomely matted and framed under clear acrylic. The cards in question were produced by Chi-Foursome, Inc. and were intended for gas stations and supermarkets, but ultimately the issue may have been limited to as few as 3,000 sets and never released as originally planned and a small quantity sold at Wrigley Field instead. Fortunately for our bidders, our consigner snagged a complete set and treated it with the respect it clearly deserves. The lead piece features a rough color marker drawing of Ernie Banks that was clearly designed as the prototype for the eight-card set. The Banks original is drawn on a slight paper stock that clearly exhibits its proof nature, and also includes a Banks cut signature taped to the lower left-hand section. This original art is nicely double-matted and framed in Cubs blue and red atop the finished Banks card below it, all part of a huge display at 25-by-46 inches, with Cubs blue wooded frame and acrylic glass. Each of the eight cards are then individually matted and framed in the same style at 16.5-by-19.5 inches, with each signed by the player in question in the neighborhood of their facsimile version. The frames are virtually NRMT, though occasionally showing a small scratch here and there from minimal handling. And the lineup: Banks, Beckert, Jenkins, Kessinger, Pappas, Pepitone, Santo and Williams. The resulting set of framed Cubbie caricatures would make an earth-shaking addition to a Cubs-themed rec room or maybe a tavern in the Windy City. A grouping of memorabilia as unique and fascinating as the curious Cubs fans that it entices. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. From the Roger Marth Collection.
