1970 Willie Mays Signed San Francisco Giants Uniform Player's Contract. Say Pay! The greatest five-tool player in the history of the sport assumed in 1966 the title that Ted Williams had held since 1949 as the highest paid player in Major League history, but this season fire-throwing ace Bob Gibson knocked Mays from his perch with a $150,000 salary. Mays remained the top earner among position players however, with this contract bumping his pay to a very lofty (by 1970 MLB standards) $135,000.

Here we present the very first Willie Mays player contract to reach the hobby's auction block, one executed just prior to the 1969 season during which Mays would become the third member of the 600 Home Run Club, but addressing only the 1970 campaign. The four-page document is the standard "Uniform Player's Contract" utilized in the Majors for years, signed on the third page by Mays, Giants team owner Horace Stoneham and National League president Warren Giles (each 9/10 or better). Intriguingly, a single typed page of Giants letterhead remains stapled to the third page, dated "January 12, 1970," and signed again by Mays and Stoneham. This document establishes the payment schedule of the salary stipulated in the main contract. Again, the signatures rate 9/10 or better.

All pages present without any condition issues beyond original storage folds and an occasional stray wrinkle. An important and exceptionally rare document. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
