1965 Tom Zachary Handwritten Letter Discussing Giving Up Babe Ruth's Record 60th Home Run of 1927. Though he was one of the finest American League pitchers of the 1920's, even posting a perfect twelve and zero record in 1929, this nineteen-year veteran of the mound was forever doomed to be known as the man who gave up the Babe's sixtieth homer in 1927. His recollection of the event for a young autograph collector is priceless. "Dear Mr. Norwine, I had been traded back to Washington from St. Louis Browns July 14th. They (Washington) felt that if they had a left hander who could beat the Yankees they could win the pennant. I had failed to win any of four previous starts and I wanted desperately to win the fifth one and had them tied 2-2 in 8th, 2 outs, one on and a count of 3 balls 2 strikes on Ruth. I threw him a curve but I made a bad mistake, I should have thrown a fast one at his big fat head. Lost game 4-2, Sincerely Tom Zachary (over)." Here he continues on the back of the page. "It was a tremendous swat down right field foul line--at that time there were just bleacher seats in right field with foul pole at fence. It went so high and far up in bleachers that it would be difficult to judge it accurately. I hollared 'foul ball' but I got no support, very little from my teammates so it must have been a fair ball--but I always contended to Ruth that it was foul. T. Zachary." All ink, including both Zachary signatures, is Mint, as is the 6x9" lined page. Included is original mailing envelope with a third Zachary autograph (partially touched by vintage tape). Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
