    Description

1948 Babe Ruth Signed "The Babe Ruth Story" Paperback. A two-page handwritten letter dated June 5, 1948, stapled inside this softcover volume, tells the tale of Ruth's signing of the book, and of the very poor condition of the once robust slugger. He notes that ghost writer Bob Considine, who signs as well, "told me later, when Babe wasn't around to hear, that he is much sicker than he himself realizes. He said that very shortly any piece of paper with Babe Ruth's name on it will be valuable because he won't be on this earth very long." And, of course, two months later Ruth was gone. But his black fountain pen ink is as strong as ever on the opening page, reading "To My Pal Jerry From Babe Ruth." Considine's signed greeting is just below. The book exhibits considerable handling wear, and both the aforementioned letter and a newspaper announcing Ruth's death are affixed to the interior pages, but the signature remains effectively unscathed by these issues, and stands among the last ever provided by the game's greatest figure.
