    Description

1946 Moe Berg Signed Original European Train Pass Booklet. Never considered a great baseball player, Moe Berg was nonetheless called the "brainiest guy in baseball." His story is not so much about the fifteen seasons he lasted in the Major Leagues, which should be enough to warrant appreciation on its own, but he is more known as a war spy. During the 1934 Tour of Japan, Berg was appointed to the team to act in a role of gathering intelligence on Japan prior to the outbreak of World War II. While other players were touring the city, Berg was on the top of Saint Luke's Hospital filming the city and harbor of Tokyo.

In 1942, with the attack on Pearl Harbor, Berg left baseball and accepted an official position for the Office of Strategic Services, continuing his spy career. As the office changed to the Central Intelligence Agency, Berg moved on to that division until the mid-1950's. He was awarded the Medal of Freedom but declined the award. Unfortunately, by the mid-1950's the CIA had forgotten about the important work Berg provided during the war and felt Berg's services were no longer needed. He spent the remainder of his life unemployed and living with family members.

Up for auction in this lot is a fantastic relic of Berg's spy travels. After the war, he spent much time overseas traveling Europe in both official and unofficial roles. The offered item is an actual European Train Pass for May through June of 1946. The 3.25x4.5" green booklet features a black and white photograph of Berg inside the front cover along with his signature and address. The remainder of the seventeen pages are rules for the pass written in three languages. Condition is excellent and the signature rates an 8/10. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
