1937 Baseball Autograph Album with Gehrig, Lazzeri, Paul Waner. This mouth-watering compilation of autographs was compiled by a young resident of Chester, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, whose resident Phillies and Athletics allowed access to the greatest of National and American League stars. Young Thomas Deitman chose his targets well, as the sixty autographs inside feature many of the greatest stars in the game. Each autograph is signed on a blank business card and affixed in corners to a black scrapbook page. White ink identifies each below, though many need no introduction. Beginning at the front of the book, we find Chuck Klein (7/10 pencil), Bucky Walters (9/10 ink), Lou Gehrig (personalized 10/10 pencil), Joe DiMaggio (gorgeous 9/10 early signature in ink), Carl Hubbell (10/10 ink), Joe Cronin (9/10 ink), Ernie Lombardi (10/10 ink), Bill McKechnie (inscribed "Boston Bees 1937" in 8/10 pencil). Al Lopez (10/10 ink), Lefty Grove (9/10 ink), Chas. Gehringer (10/10 ink), Earl Averill (9/10 ink), Luke Appling (9/10 ink), Paul Waner (9/10 ink), Red Ruffing (signed "Charles 'Red' Ruffing, Yankees Worlds Champions of 1937," 10/10 pencil), Burleigh Grimes (9/10 ink), Joe Medwick (10/10 ink), Connie Mack (10/10 ink), Bill Dickey (10/10 ink), John Mize (9/10 ink), Tony Lazzeri (9/10 ink). A few other Hall of Famers are present in clubhouse form (Cochrane, Hartnett, Dean, a second Grove), but all listed are the genuine article. Most cards show some light and essentially inconsequential toning/staining from age, but the catalog imagery should illustrate that these factors are minor considerations.
