1925 Christy Mathewson Signed Uniform Player's Contract. Let's make it clear right off the bat that this is not a contract employing the great Matty's services, but instead securing Ernie "Red" Padgett as the team's shortstop in Mathewson's role as president of the Boston Braves. The Hall of Fame pitcher was, of course, well past his playing days at this late juncture and quite ill--he would not live to see the end of the calendar year. His "C. Mathewson" signature provides no hint of his failing health, however, applied with the same unshakable hand that earned him 373 pitching victories and enshrinement with the first Hall of Fame class. His 10/10 offering is the only signature on this contract, suggesting that terms were changed before Padgett signed his consent. The contract exhibits original storage folds and a rusty paper clip mark, but nothing that distracts the eye or infringes in any way on Mathewson's important autograph. Auction LOA from James Spence.
