Matty formally contests a Brooklyn Robins home run call

1923 Christy Mathewson Signed Letter, PSA/DNA Mint 9. In the gruff and gritty age of the Dead Ball, the college educated Matty was a welcome anomaly, a favorite of male fans for his dominance on the mound and of the ladies for his blue-eyed good looks and gentlemanly comportment. Accidental exposure to mustard gas during a World War I training exercise would wreak havoc on his health in the years following his tour of duty, the primary catalyst for his fatal tuberculosis at age forty-five.

Two years before his passing, Matty sent this letter to National League President John Heydler in his capacity as President of the Boston Braves franchise. The legendary Dead Ball Era hurler disputes the ruling of a home run in an Independence Day contest at Brooklyn's Ebbets Field. He writes, in part:

"It is my understanding that a flag pole is part of a fence and therefore a flag attached thereto would be a part of the fence so if the ball did not go over the flag, it is not hit over the fence in accordance with Rule 48, Section 2."

The letter is neatly typed on "Boston National League Base Ball Company" letterhead and signed at the conclusion in the Hall of Famer's standard "C. Mathewson" format at a strength of 9/10. Original mailing folds and a pair of pin holes at upper left are noted, but condition is otherwise fine. A solid exemplar of a tough and essential autograph. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, Mint 9. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
