1917 Charles Weeghman Signed Chicago Cubs Promissory Note. Wrigley Field actually began life as Weeghman Park, named after the lunch counter magnate who built the ballfield to house his Federal League club, the Chicago Whales. After the Fed folded, Weeghman acquired part ownership in the National League's Chicago Cubs, and transferred them to his park, but as his business fortunes soured he was forced to surrender more and more of his stock to William Wrigley, Jr. to raise money, eventually losing everything. This key figure in Chicago baseball history is present in only the most comprehensive and well-heeled of collections, so this $10,000 promissory note issued as a representative of the "Chicago National League Ball Club" is a welcome find indeed. Weeghman's signature at bottom right rates an impressive 9+/10, and the canceled note likewise presents marvelously, with no flaws of any real concern. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
