    1910 Christy Mathewson Signed Book Once Belonging to Honus Wagner, PSA/DNA Mint 9. "Mathewson was the greatest pitcher who ever lived," Connie Mack once explained. "He had knowledge, judgment, perfect control and form. It was wonderful to watch him pitch when he wasn't pitching against you." Matty's supreme relevance to the game of baseball and his early death in 1925 as a delayed reaction to a World War I gas attack have had dramatic effects on his autograph's demand and supply, with serious collectors skirmishing for the few quality examples that exist. We expect fierce bidding for the example we present here, a 9+/10 beauty penned upon a book plate that remains affixed inside a presentational copy of Mathewson's 1910 book Won in the Ninth. Mathewson's elegant script is found at the bottom of the 3x4" card, which holds a typed attribution to its original owner "Mr. J. Hans Wagner" and a "26" serial number from what one could reasonably expect is a limited run of either 500 or 1,000. A handwritten "Virginia Mae Wagner and Betty Baine Wagner" bears a striking resemblance to Honus' script, but our authenticators have deemed the text to be that of Betty. The book shows general handling wear and the first two pages are partially loose from the spine, but otherwise the volume remains tightly bound. A wonderful artifact connecting two of the greatest figures of the Dead Ball Era. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, Mint 9. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
