    Description

1908 Ty Cobb Handwritten Signed Letter. A notation in an unknown hand dates this single page of correspondence to 1908, a season that would see the young Georgia Peach claim his second of eleven batting titles, and lead the American League in slugging percentage, extra base hits and runs batted in. So it's easy to understand why the legend in the making might balk at the lowball salary offer from the club he would lead to the A.L. pennant for the second consecutive season in 1908. He writes of an offer to coach the University of Georgia team, explaining, "...Let me tell you George right now I can make 4 or 5 hundred dollars more this season coaching that team and playing outlaw ball than Detroit offered me which was $3000. I would be a chump to play with them at that figure..." Cobb closes the letter with a simple, "Your friend, Ty," with all ink rating an impressive 8+/10. The single 8.5x11" page exhibits original mailing folds with an inch of separation at the top, and a bit of spotting, but nothing that diminishes the legibility or fine aesthetics of this rare, very early Cobb ALS.
