    Description

1889-90 Washington Nationals Legal Documents including National League Resignation Letter. The original Washington Major League franchise, officially named the National Baseball Club of Washington, entered the national League for the first time in 1886. After four dismal seasons, Washington resigned from the League at the close of the 1889 campaign. The two documents presented here, the only ones known to exist from the first Major League franchise representing the nation's capital, are the legal papers effecting that historic transition. The first, dated November 30, 1889, and signed by the club's secretary, certifies that a meeting of the team's board of directors has appointed Walter F. Hewitt as president. An embossed seal, complete with crossed bats and ball, illustrates the legal standing of the document. The second, a letter dated March 21, 1890, and signed by Mr. Hewitt, officially tenders the team's resignation from the National League.

Adding to the appeal, we must note that the resignation letter is handwritten, and in effect signed, by N.E. Young in his capacity as "Sec'y National League," a title held in conjunction with his position as the league's president. Nick Young, in his earlier years, was the leading figure in Washington baseball as a player, manager and team official. A possible future Hall of Famer, Young organized the meeting at which the historic National Association (1871-75) was formed. As with most National Association and early National League legal documents extant, this pair originated from the N.E. Young estate. Each piece survives marvelously, with no fading of the ink. Original storage folds are evident, with just a hint of foxing, but none of this is of any visual concern. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
