    Description

1949 Handwritten Letter Home from Mickey Mantle's Roommate with Independence Yankees. A passing reference turns this otherwise insignificant letter into a crucial relic of Mickey Mantle prehistory, as a pitcher for the 1949 Independence Yankees writes home, complaining of foot soreness and mosquitos that "chew you to death down here," but optimistic about his upcoming starts. But the true appeal are the lines, "I room with Mantle, the shortstop. He was hitting 230 a week and a half ago, he went on a hitting streak and jumped up to .300 in that time. He is fast as lightning, beats out a lot of infield hits and bunts." The single page is folded into the shape of a greeting card and dated July 26, 1949. All ink is 9+/10. Original mailing fold with "Independence, Kansas" postmark is included.
