    Description

"Any ballplayer that don't sign autographs for little kids ain't an American, he's a communist."

1942 Rogers Hornsby Ft. Worth Cats Signed Letter. If it wasn't for Babe Ruth, Rogers Hornsby would be the name associated with Golden Age batting brilliance, as a quick inspection of the statistics would illustrate. Between 1920 through 1929, the hard-slugging Texan summitted the fabled .400 plateau three times, claiming the National League batting title all but three years of the decade. His averages of forty doubles and twenty-five long balls during this span paint the portrait of a hitter equal parts Cobb and Ruth, and provide a worthwhile challenge to Ted Williams' claim as the greatest hitter that ever lived. "I don't like to sound egotistical," Hornsby was once quoted to say, "but every time I stepped up to the plate with a bat in my hands, I couldn't help but feel sorry for the pitcher."

By 1942, Hornsby was deep into the wilderness of his baseball travels - having become the general and field manager of the Fort Worth Cats in late-1941. "Rajah" solidly signed this January 26, 1942 letter on Cats stationary in black steel tip ink. Mailing fold marks touch the uppermost portion of the autograph with mild wear exhibited otherwise.
