1923 Christy Mathewson Signed Letter. In the gruff and gritty age of the Dead Ball, the college educated Matty was a welcome anomaly, a favorite of male fans for his dominance on the mound and of the ladies for his blue-eyed good looks and gentlemanly comportment. Accidental exposure to mustard gas during a World War I training exercise would wreak havoc on his health in the years following his tour of duty, the primary catalyst for his fatal tuberculosis at age forty-five.

Two years before his passing, Matty sent this letter to a member of the Boston Braves' Memphis farm club in his capacity as the Big League team's president. He sympathizes with the player's unhappiness with the hot and humid climate of his new Southern home but explains, "Under the rules the Memphis Club has first claim on your services, consequently we are not at liberty to place you elsewhere..." Padgett would ultimately find his way to the Boston club and record the fourth unassisted triple play in Major League history on October 6, 1923.

While Mathewson typically signed his Braves correspondence with a first initial, he spells out the complete "Christy Mathewson" at the end of this letter, applied in unimprovably bold blue fountain pen ink. A couple tape and paper clip rust stains cause little distraction, nor do the original mailing folds. One of the finest Mathewson autograph exemplars we've had the good fortune to offer.
