    Description

A stunning creation from two greats of the game

Late 1920's Lou Gehrig Signed Photograph by George Burke. It's hard to put a finger on exactly what it is that makes the work of renowned baseball photographer George Burke so special, but his work is instantly recognizable to any collector in the genre. Decades before advent of Photoshop and all of the various tricks of the trade used to shape reality into something more beautiful, Burke was able to work his magic with nothing more than the mechanics of a rather rudimentary camera and a special understanding of the balance between light and shadow. His point of focus appears to materialize from, and then retreat back into, a sort of dreamlike haze, infusing his work with a nostalgic glow that works so perfectly with the subject matter of the Golden Age and Depression-era game.

Of course, Gehrig's Germanic good looks were a photographer's dream as well, and his smile speaks to the remarkable personal and team success of the period during which the image was snapped, characterized by three pennants, two World Championships and an American League MVP nod. His black fountain pen inscription, undiminished in any fashion from its original 9+/10 application, is clearly his late 1920's style, and reads, "To Doris, Best Wishes, Lou Gehrig."

Tack holes appear within the wide white borders at the corners of the 8x10" photo, and a few light wrinkles intrude upon the image area but are only visible at sharp angles to the light. When matted and framed, the piece will convincingly simulate a NRMT appearance. We do not hesitate in calling this one of the finest Gehrig signed photos in the hobby. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
