    Description

Early 1960's Negro League Correspondence Archive (46 pieces). While the integration of baseball begun by Jackie Robinson's debut in 1947 was unquestionably a positive development for the heart and soul of our National Pastime, the advancement would slowly choke the life out of the Negro Leagues as top players were snatched up by the Majors, followed by the African-American fan base. This fascinating archive catches the dying breaths of the Negro Leagues with a selection of handwritten letters (6), typed letters (21) and various documents and contracts (19). The collection centers around the Indianapolis Clowns, with multiple documents sent to or signed by their team owner Syd Pollock. The letters largely relate to scheduling of barnstorming events, and give some sense of the fading opportunities available to a team and a baseball tradition hurtling toward obsolescence. All pages exhibit typical handling/storage wear, but there is nothing which could be properly described as damage. A thrilling lot for the baseball historian. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
