Circa 1962 Joe DiMaggio & Marilyn Monroe Signed Baseball with Monroe Signed Cocktail Napkin. In what was arguably the biggest autograph news of the 2006 sports memorabilia auction season, a magnificently well-preserved Official American League (Cronin) baseball commanded a price of $191,200 in Heritage Sports Signature Auction #704, setting the mark for highest price ever paid for an autographed baseball at auction. While the mark was admittedly eye-popping, it wasn't unjustified, as the pairing of America's greatest sports star and its greatest sex symbol was likewise met with enormous public interest in the news of the day. Such intense interest in anything DiMaggio/Monroe-related had long since been established in precedent.

We are pleased to present here another example of this coveted pairing on horsehide, or at least an unusual approximation thereof. The medium utilized by this ultimate jock/prom queen pairing is an oddly-crafted and shaped ceramic baseball from DiMaggio's restaurant at the San Francisco wharf, solid as a rock and bearing more resemblance to a moon in miniature than a typical baseball in its imperfect geometry.. It is, however, clearly meant to approximate a baseball, with its red painted laces and the black facsimile Joe DiMaggio autograph between at the reverse sweet spot.

But, make no mistake, the blue ink sweet spot offering from the Yankee Clipper is the genuine article, as is that of his gorgeous platinum blonde bride, applied just below. Each autograph retains exceptional 9/10 boldness, with any minor deficiencies the result of the odd writing surface rather than any effects of time or poor handling. Acquired at the same time, and likewise included in this lot, is a cocktail napkin from DiMaggio's, lightly stained but bearing a flawless 9+/10 blue ink inscription from the iconic actress, reading, "To Dick, Warmest Regards, Marilyn Monroe." Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
