    Description

Style match to 1960 British Open photography!

Circa 1960 Arnold Palmer Match Worn Golf Shoes.

Heritage regulars will recall three pairs of Arnold Palmer match worn shoes, sold in our August and November 2017 auctions. Each was acquired from Palmer directly in the 1990's by an employee at the links legend's home course, the Latrobe Country Club in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The gentlemen found Palmer discarding the shoes in the locker room trash and asked if he could keep them, with the intention of gifting them to his own father for use.

The grateful new owner soon realized that these battle-scarred relics were far better suited to collecting than further wear, however, and saved them for the better part of a quarter century before consigning the collection to Heritage. This pair derives from that collection.

The distinctive "Johnston & Murphy" brand brown leather kilties exhibit spectacular wear, with a black marker "A.P." hand-applied to each interior sole. The style is a perfect match to a classic photograph of Palmer competing in the 1960 British Open, provided here as the cover image of the October 3, 2016 Sports Illustrated memorial issue recognizing his passing. Palmer would finish second in that tournament, one stroke off Australian Kel Nagle's victorious pace. Letter of provenance from consignor.
