The ultimate celebrity couple makes a rare joint appearance

Circa 1954 Joe DiMaggio & Marilyn Monroe Signed Album Page. Their 1954 marriage lasted just nine months but it remains arguably the most famous celebrity pairing in history, the ultimate sports hero and the prototypical blonde bombshell. Biographers tend to fault DiMaggio for the split, his jealousy over the sexualization of his actress wife on the silver screen and in the larger media fueling a growing mutual animosity. Many believed the pair was on the path to reconciliation upon Monroe's sudden passing in 1962, and the heartbroken slugger saw to it that white roses were delivered to her grave twice weekly for twenty years.

Intensely private, particularly where his lost love was concerned, DiMaggio recoiled at any discussion of his ex in the years following their split and her death, and flatly refused to autograph anything bearing her name or likeness. Thus the only dual-signed material from this pair dates to either their brief 1954 marriage or the even shorter era of reconciliation shortly before Monroe's passing.

Here we find the former, a 4.5x6" yellow album page autographed during their abridged matrimony. The same blue fountain pen ink is utilized by each, with the groom adding a short salutation to his autograph and the bride's offering unadorned. The ink rates 8/10, and a couple stray spots of toning provide little distraction. The page is slabbed as "Authentic" in a PSA/DNA capsule, which is attractively framed with a modern print of an 8x10" photo of the pair. Full framed dimensions are 15x26". Auction history was made in May 2006 when a World Record for a dual-signed baseball was set by this pairing at a figure of $191,200. That result should give some indication of the investment potential present here. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
