Circa 1930 Multi-Sport Autograph Collection with Thorpe, Foxx, Rockne. In the darkest days of the Great Depression, a youngster named Dick Nahstoll from East Lansing, Michigan apparently dedicated most of his time and all of his money toward his hobby of collecting sports autographs through the mail. The results are impressive, to say the least, the responses numbering in the hundreds. Most of the signers will be familiar only to the most educated historians of pre-war American athletics, with a heavy concentration in collegiate athletics. Certainly there may be on or more diamonds hidden in the sizable rough, but these are the key names we've been able to uncover:

Connie Mack, Jack Dempsey, Ty Cobb, James Naismith, Bronko Nagurski, Jim Thorpe, Max Schmeling, Wilbur "Fat" Henry, Jim Corbett, Benny Friedman, Red Grange, Jimmie Foxx, all Four Horsemen of Notre Dame (individual cards), Knute Rockne.

With rarely an exception, the signature are applied in 9/10 or better fountain pen ink, often to blank business card-sized paper that Nahstoll must have supplied, other times to a letter or whatever paper was handy at the time. Many (if not most) of the original mailing envelopes are here as well. It's a splendid collection with considerable "break down" value for vintage autograph dealers. Full LOA from PSA/DNA on Naismith, four Horsemen, Thorpe, Cobb, Foxx & Henry. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
