    Description

Circa 1900 Old Tom Morris Signed Cabinet Photograph. He struck the first shot in the inaugural British Open (then called The Open Championship), winning four of the seven to follow in 1861, 1862, 1864 and 1867. Remembered as the foremost pioneer of the early game, Old Tom was likewise one of its most diverse practitioners, serving as greenskeeper, clubmaker, ballmaker, instructor and course designer during his decades of service to the sport. His dedication to golf extended to the very last days of his life, as Morris perished from injuries sustained during a fall down a flight of stairs at the New Golf Club in St. Andrews just before his eighty-seventh birthday.

Despite Morris' long life and decades of fame, autographed material is exceedingly scarce, with signed images all but non-existent. Here we present a very welcome exception to that rule, a masterful photographic portrait of the elderly links pioneer signed in the lower margin in 9/10 black fountain pen ink. The image itself measures 6x8" with the cabinet mount completing the dimensions of the rare and ancient relic at 10x12". Light wear at the edges and corner account for nearly the entirety of the minor condition concerns, and a small imperfection near Morris' autograph does not touch his essential ink. A thrilling opportunity for the advanced golf collector. Pre-Certified by PSA/DNA. Letter of Provenance from the Foulis Family.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
