1930 Ty Cobb Signed Check to His Mother, Endorsed by Her! Just three weeks before Ty Cobb made his first appearance in a Major League uniform in August of 1905, his father was fatally shot by his mother. The official story had been that William Herschel Cobb suspected his wife of infidelity and was sneaking past his own bedroom window to catch her in the act of betrayal when she mistook him for an intruder and fired in self-defense. The tragedy would profoundly affect young Tyrus, and he attributed his ferocious game to his father, saying, "He never got to see me play...but I knew he was watching me and I never let him down."

A quarter century after that family nightmare, Ty made this check payable to "Mrs. W. H. Cobb" in bold black fountain pen ink, signing with his standard "Tyrus R. Cobb" check format. All ink is 9/10. On the reverse his mother signs twice, first as "Mrs. W.H. Cobb" and immediately below as "Mis. Amanda Cobb." The check exhibits some staining and fold lines, but the enormous importance of the piece overrides any condition concerns. It's arguably the most desirable Cobb check in the hobby.
