Description
1912 World Series Victor's Check Issued to Boston Red Sox Manager Jake Stahl. If you've ever heard Fred Snodgrass' fatal error in the eighth and final game of the 1912 Series called "The $30,000 Muff," this very check is the reason why. The figure represented the difference in the size of the checks issued to the victorious Red Sox and vanquished New York Giants. Thrillingly, this victor's check survives with a century-old photomatch, printed in the October 19, 1912 issue of The Boston Globe under a headline reading, "Here's the $88,543.44 Plum, Split 22 Ways, Plucked by Red Sox as Their Share in World's Series Proceeds."The article's text reads, in part, "Jake Stahl, manager of the new World's Champions, was an early caller at Fenway Park yesterday morning, and was made happy by the arrival of a check for $88,543.44, made payable to him, from Sec. John E. Bruce of the National Commission, for Boston players who are eligible to share in the profits of the recent series...Immediately after the check was photographed, for the reproduction printed herewith, Jake hopped into his auto in company with Sec. McRoy and drove to the State-st Trust Company and deposited the check to his credit. Jake then returned to the Fenway Park and went to work making out the individual checks to the players so that they could get away as soon as possible."
The check and the newspaper article exhibit some minor damage suffered over a century of storage, with a loss to the check's lower right corner affecting a portion of Stahl's endorsement on verso. But the mere survival of the piece is the real story here, and quibbles about condition are frivolous considering the enormous historical importance and ironclad provenance. A Type 1 photo of Stahl (3x4", EX) is included. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
