1996 Juan Gonzalez American League Most Valuable Player Award. Few ballplayers in Major League history have produced as dominant a decade as Juan Gonzalez' 1990's. Between 1991 and 1999, the Puerto Rican slugger averaged a staggering thirty-seven home runs and 117 RBI's per season, twice claiming the Junior Circuit's top individual honor. Here we present his personal memento from the second.

While the eyes of the baseball world were trained upon the Mark McGwire vs. Sammy Sosa arms race in the National League, Juan Gone was quietly leaving the American League in the dust, driving in a league and career-best 157 runs and fifty (50) doubles. He became the first player since Hank Greenberg in 1935 to reach triple-digits in runs batted in before the All-Star break. His forty-five (45) long balls was good enough for a fourth-place tie, but MVP voting was a veritable landslide, Gonzalez claiming twenty-one of twenty-eight first place votes ahead of runners-up Nomar Garciaparra and Derek Jeter.

Rarely does the premier symbol of individual excellence in the Major Leagues find its way to the auction block, but here we find a rare and welcome exception to that rule. The design will be familiar to any true baseball fan, a black wooden circle (16" diameter) affixed with an octagonal metal plaque announcing, "Kenesaw Mountain Landis Memorial Baseball Award." The Hall of Fame Commissioner directs his stern gaze from the center, amidst further text reporting the terms:

"Most Valuable Player, American League, Juan Gonzalez, Texas Rangers, 1998."

An emblem of the Baseball Writers Association of America is affixed at the six o'clock position. "Herff-Jones" manufacturer's insignia appears on reverse, along with a silver sharpie autograph tagged, "My Original 1998 M.V.P." Only the slightest handling and storage wear is evident, leaving the historic relic to present without any distractions of note.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
