1929 John McGraw Signed Presentational Bat. You'll search long and hard to find a single signed baseball from this gruff emperor of the Polo Grounds, but unless you have your eyes on the presented specimen, you're almost certain to search forever for McGraw signed lumber. We've encountered examples of the bat that serves as the autograph's home before, a special "Spalding" presentational model with engraved barrel text, "Loyal Giants Rooters Dinner to John J. McGraw and the 1929 Giants, New York, April 14th, 1929," but none so thrillingly blessed by the man of the hour. Little Napoleon's black fountain pen ink signature is applied to a sanded area on the barrel of the full sized (34.5") bat, which serves as an imperfect home but still allows the autograph to register at a 6/10 strength. The fifty-six year old veteran skipper would lead his 1929 Giants to eighty-four wins during the season beginning just four days ahead, good enough for a third place finish in the National League he had conquered ten times since taking the managerial reins in 1902. McGraw remains a favorite among residents of Baltimore for his early years of playing service to Ned Hanlon's World Champion Orioles, and is buried at Baltimore's New Cathedral Cemetery, less than five miles from the auction podium where this bat will find its new owner.
