    A rare playing-days representation

1926 Babe Ruth Signed Bat, PSA/DNA Mint 9. While our national pastime's most noteworthy figure laid pen to the horsehide of tens if not hundreds of thousands of baseballs during his lifetime, it is a particularly rare and exciting occurrence when one encounters a bat bearing the mark of the Babe. Autographing bats just wasn't something that was typically done back in the days before permanent markers were in vogue, so those collecting pre-war signed wood are a brave and ambitious lot. They'll have cause to celebrate now, however, as we present the finest example we have yet encountered, a nearly pristine signature model Hillerich & Bradsby retail bat (35") bearing a black fountain pen ink signature notated "1926" and assessed at a 9/10 level by the notoriously strict graders of PSA/DNA.

Ruth typically filed down the glossy surface of bats on the rare occasions he signed them to promote ink adhesion, but this practice was forgone here to no ill effect. In fact, the absence of the discoloration that such filing created only enhances the world class aesthetics of the offered masterpiece. Ruth fashions quotation marks around his storied nickname here, an enhancement that he abandoned soon after his record home run season of 1927. It's noteworthy that Ruth's batting average of .372 in 1926 was sixteen points better than that of the subsequent campaign, and only six points short of Heinie Manush's American League-leading .378, the sole obstacle denying Ruth a 1926 Triple Crown.

A stamped length code on the bat's knob of 35" represents the sole visual deviation from that of Ruth's game used models, elevating this representation above the 40 B.R. Hillerich & Bradsby models that represent the bulk of known autographed Ruth bats. Full Grading LOA from PSA/DNA, Mint 9. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
