The recent release of the Hollywood biopic "42" caused a brief spike in prices for memorabilia related to this first African-American Major Leaguer, but it's a market that has enjoyed a steady rise for decades now. On its current trajectory, the presented sphere should be a six-figure relic in a decade or two, a blue chip stock charting a similar course to that of icons like Ruth, Cobb and Young. While Robinson may not have dominated the record books in the same manner, his unparalleled significance to the sport, and to the culture at large, earns him a place on that Mount Rushmore of our National Pastime, and his autograph is a requirement for any significant collection.
Here we present one of the finest examples thereof, a high-grade single enhanced in desirability and significance by its special vintage. The medium of an Official National League baseball from the presidency of Ford Frick assures the ball was signed no later than the last game of the 1951 season, when Bobby Thomson's Shot Heard 'round the World ended the Bums' pennant chase. Warren Giles' facsimile signature would appear on all Senior Circuit horsehide from 1952 through the end of Robinson's career. Frick's firm hand in threatening suspension of any players refusing to take the field with Robinson in 1947 rates among his most noteworthy and admirable presidential traits.
As is typical of Robinson singles, the autograph is placed high on a side panel, applied in blue fountain pen ink rating a splendid 9/10. A couple tiny dots of toning are mentioned only in the interest of full disclosure and do nothing to minimize the boldness of the signature. Toning is light and uniform throughout the ball, providing an ideal, vintage patina. It's certainly in the top percentile of this essential breed, worthy of the most discriminating collector.
