Late 1920's Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig Dual-Signed Baseball, PSA/DNA NM-MT 8. It's a serious challenger for the title of "Best in Breed," ticking all the boxes necessary for the ultimate Ruth/Gehrig duo. First and foremost, always, is signature quality, and the presented representation comes by its lofty PSA/DNA assessment honestly. The Bambino's artfully scripted sweet spot contribution garners a 7/10 on the experts' merciless scale, with the Iron Horse to the north a point better in 8/10 fountain pen ink. The ONL (Heydler) ball completes the composite scoring with a super-tough 8/10 rating, almost unheard of for pre-war horsehide. But here the leather is pale and clean, and the factory stamping impressively bold for its advanced vintage. This pair's residence on a Senior Circuit sphere also strongly suggests Fall Classic vintage, as the Yankee icons would find few other opportunities to sign a ball from the National League.To the best of our knowledge, only a single example of this most essential Yankee artifact has ever been graded higher by PSA/DNA, a NM-MT+ 8.5 that garnered over $340,000 at auction earlier this year. This lofty price tag should give some indication of just how coveted high-grade examples are, and the increasing difficulty in acquiring a quality specimen. The top representations have been steadily finding their way into permanent collections over the past several years, so the opportunity to acquire a rival to the presented example could be a long time in coming.
