Description

Circa 1940 Walter Johnson Single Signed Baseball. In 1917, a Connecticut arms laboratory recorded Johnson's fastball at 134 feet per second, equal to ninety-nine miles per hour, a speed the lanky farmboy was somehow able to generate with a smooth sidearmed motion that baffled and terrified opposing batters. New York Highlanders outfielder Birdie Cree provided his own methodology for handling Johnson's speed: "When you see the arm start forward, swing." Presented is a scarce single from the inaugural class Hall of Famer, penned on the sweet spot of an OAL (Harridge) ball, the ideal medium for a lifetime servant of the Junior Circuit. The black fountain pen signature rates approximately 8/10, and scattered brown toning does nothing to diminish the fine visual appeal. Your winning bid will get you halfway toward completion of a 400 Win Club collection. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication.
