Description

The three greatest bats of the pre-war game...

Circa 1940 Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb & Tris Speaker Signed Baseball. One was a gregarious, free-swinging slugger. Another was a seething vessel of slap-and-sprint determination. The third came down somewhere in the middle, but each strode a distinctly different path to the gates of Cooperstown and the upper reaches of the baseball pantheon. None was immune to scandal, with Cobb and Speaker nearly relegated to a shared room in baseball purgatory with Shoeless Joe by a 1926 gambling scandal, and Ruth missing most of the 1925 season for maladies alternately identified in low whispers as alcoholism and sexually transmitted disease.

Yet each is properly identified as a resident upon the short list of greatest ballplayers ever, a legacy ensured by the appearance of each on the dais as members of the Hall of Fame's inaugural class. It was around the time of that enshrinement that the trio laid fountain pen to the hide of the presented "Official League" orb, each 9+/10 autograph then sealed for posterity beneath the thick amber coating of vintage shellac.

The reigning Home Run King, Hit King and Doubles King each assume solo residence on one of the ball's side panels, providing the convincing appearance of an elite-level single signed baseball times three. It's certainly one of the most glorious "theme" balls we have had the good fortune to present, and one that will find no shortage of suitors when its time upon the Platinum Night auction block arrives.
