1982 Darryl Strawberry Signed Game Worn Tidewater Tides Jersey - Worn During the 1982 International League Playoffs! Exhibiting talent and athleticism way beyond his years, Darryl Strawberry was already six-feet-three and all muscle by the time he was in the tenth grade. One writer wrote of him at the time, "He had the body of a basketball forward and the natural baseball swing - a powerful, looping uppercut - of a historic home run hitter."

In June of 1980, Straw realized his dream of being the first overall pick in the Major League draft when he was selected in that prized spot by the New York Mets. Rapidly progressing through the Mets minor league farm system, the baseball prodigy spent 1980 with Kingsport in the Appalachian League (Rookie), 1981 with Lynchburg in the Carolina League (A), and 1982 with Jackson in the Texas League (AA). In September of 1982, after registering thirty-four home runs and ninety-seven RBI with Jackson, Strawberry joined the Tidewater Tides of the International League (AAA) to bolster their roster for the upcoming playoffs. With Strawberry on board, Tidewater pulverized Columbus in the first round (3-0) and crushed Rochester in the Governor's Cup Finals (3-0) to become champions of the International League.

The following season, Straw would capture the N.L. Rookie of the Year award. He would conclude his seventeen-year Major League career with 335 home runs, 1,000 RBI, eight All-Star selections, and four World Series titles.

Presented here is Darryl Strawberry's Tidewater Tides jersey which he wore during the 1982 International League playoffs. Soft, powder blue knit pullover has "Tides" scripted across the chest with "5" on the verso, all screened on in orange and white. Complimentary orange/white/orange trim adorns the v-neck collar and ribbed sleeve cuffs. Two tags in the front tail include "Moony's Sporting Goods, Norfolk, VA. Distributors. Medalist Sand-Knit" and "Medalist Sand-Knit, Large. Berlin, WI U.S.A." A NRMT black sharpie autograph is thoughtfully placed on the tail of the "s" along with the inscription "1982."

The provenance on this jersey includes a 1982 letter on Tidewater Tides letterhead confirming a lot of 1979-82 uniforms as being game worn. The Norfolk Tides (formerly the Tidewater Tides) have also confirmed that Strawberry did play for the club during the 1982 playoffs and that he wore #5. Furthermore, there is no other evidence that any other player wore #5 during 1982 and photographic evidence from the 1982 playoffs matches the style, colors and fonts of this exemplar. Auction LOA from SGC Authentic. Letter of provenance from the Tidewater Tides. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
