Description

1980's Bob Cain Recounts Eddie Gaedel Game Single Signed Baseball. OAL (Brown) baseball, on which pitcher Bob Cain has penned in neat printing the story of Bill Veeck's greatest inspiration. Covering most of the ball's surface, Cain has written, in full, "As you may know, Eddie Gaedel stepped out of a big birthday cake wearing a Brownie uniform # 1/8. We all thought it was a big joke until the umpire asked for his contract, which the Browns manager produced. When he was announced to bat, our catcher layed on the ground to give me a low target, the umpire made him get into his usual squat position and yelled play ball. I walked him on four pitches high. Bill Veeck was on the roof of the stadium and said he would have shot Eddie if he would have swung. Midgets were barred from baseball the next day. We won the game 6-2. At the time I was pitching for the Detroit Tigers." So it was on August 19, 1951 that Eddie Gaedel walked into history, while Bob Cain searched in vain for Eddie's strike zone. A very unusual ball, signed by Cain on a side panel that has been personalized to Marty (very small personalization that's barely noticeable). There is speculation that Cain only signed 2-3 dozen balls this way. All ink 9+/10. Very uncommon. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Pre-Certified by PSA/DNA.
