1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team Signed Baseball. A tragic plane crash on New Year's Eve would claim the life of the Pirates' greatest and noblest star, making this one of the final team balls ever signed by Roberto Clemente. He appears along with twenty-five fellow Bucs on this "Interscholastic League" ball, including notables like Mazeroski, Stargell, Ellis, Oliver, Virdon, Sanguillen and more. Autograph quality averages 8/10, with none dipping more than a point below that mark. A thin clear coat is partially responsible for the impressive state. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication (asserts CH Stennett, May, Alley). Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (asserts CH Stennett, Mazeroski, May).

This lot derives from the collection of the late Reverend G. Richard McKelvey, a true pioneer of the baseball autograph collecting hobby. For nearly eight decades, Reverend McKelvey actively compiled his collection of in-person autographs, and is widely recognized as the innovator of "theme balls," paving the way for the wildly popular 500 Home Run Club and 300 Win Club baseballs of today. Many other noteworthy pieces from his collection are currently up for bidding in our Sunday Internet Sports Auctions.
