Description

1970's Roger Maris & Tracy Stallard Signed Baseball. They're forever linked in baseball lore, the victor and the vanquished in one of the most famous home run shots of our National Pastime's history. The former (and in many historians' minds, legitimate) single season Home Run King takes the sweet spot position with a 10/10 blue ballpoint signature, an "Oct 1, 1961" notation on the northern panel apparently likewise in Rajah's hand. To the west we encounter an equally bold offering from the Boston Red Sox pitcher whose fastball wasn't fast enough that day. JSA has deemed this signature is traced. A thin indention passes through the slugger's signature but to little detriment, and scattered toning elsewhere is similarly benign. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.

This lot derives from the collection of the late Reverend G. Richard McKelvey, a true pioneer of the baseball autograph collecting hobby. For nearly eight decades, Reverend McKelvey actively compiled his collection of in-person autographs, and is widely recognized as the innovator of "theme balls," paving the way for the wildly popular 500 Home Run Club and 300 Win Club baseballs of today. Many other noteworthy pieces from his collection are currently up for bidding in our Sunday Internet Sports Auctions.
