Description
1965 Satchel Paige Houston Astros Single Signed Baseball. There likely is not another pitcher who could claim to be the finest to ever toe the rubber with less than 500 innings pitched in the Major Leagues, but Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige can. Since stats are shoddy or unkept at best for the vast majority of Negro League teams the only way to compare the lanky right to other hurlers is to go off of what his competition and teammates had to say.Of particular interest to this specific single signed, is that Paige is likely to have been the first pitcher to toss a baseball from the mound at Houston's revolutionary Astrodome. As the story goes, team VP George Kirksey wanted to know if a curveball would actually curve indoors, and knowing that the then-59 year old ace was in town he had him suit up in full uniform and rear back. While we cannot definitively date this ball to this event, the Houston Astros stamping makes for a compelling story.
