1961 Roger Maris Signed Baseball Used in 61st Home Run Game. Shellac is typically frowned upon by the baseball autograph collector, but here it helps to seal the ideal provenance of the presented baseball, one of only two in the hobby known to date to the historic October 1, 1961 game in which Roger Maris toppled Babe Ruth's single season home run record. The other baseball, of course, is the home run ball itself, caught and subsequently sold by spectator Sal Durante, a story widely covered by the press at the time.

This OAL (Cronin) ball was fouled into the stands that day and retrieved by a fan who sought out the new Home Run King and his buddy Mickey for autographs after the considerable dust had settled. Maris' signature retains a 9/10 boldness, while Mickey's is barely visible on the sweet spot. But most important is the handwritten (unknown hand) notation on the ball's southern panel reading "1 Oct. 1961." This ink is sealed beneath what is clearly an ancient coating of shellac, ensuring the notation is no modern affectation. An exciting piece which will serve as the hobby's only opportunity to own a baseball used on one of the most significant dates in post-war Yankees history. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
