Description

1960's Gabby Hartnett Single Signed Baseball. The man behind the plate for the Babe's controversial "Called Shot," Hartnett is best remembered today for his own historic homer, a bottom of the ninth walk-off blast into the Wrigley Field darkness to overtake the Pittsburgh Pirates late in the 1938 pennant race. The man responsible for the famous "Homer in the Gloaming" has provided an extensive inscription and signature upon this "Constellation League" ball, his 8/10 blue ballpoint ink reading, "To Lefty Campbell, a real fellow, what more can I say, My Best Always, Leo 'Gabby' Hartnett." A thin coating of shellac and a couple areas of toning appear above the writing, but to little detriment. A rare and desirable figure from the man widely considered to be the best catcher of the twentieth century's first half. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.

This lot derives from the collection of the late Reverend G. Richard McKelvey, a true pioneer of the baseball autograph collecting hobby. For nearly eight decades, Reverend McKelvey actively compiled his collection of in-person autographs, and is widely recognized as the innovator of "theme balls," paving the way for the wildly popular 500 Home Run Club and 300 Win Club baseballs of today. Many other noteworthy pieces from his collection are currently up for bidding in our Sunday Internet Sports Auctions.
