    Description

1954 President Dwight D. Eisenhower Signed Baseball to Umpire He Heckled. Jeers from the crowd are just part of the job for the Big League umpire, but it's not every day you get an earful from the Leader of the Free World. Search "Google" for "Umpire John Flaherty" and you'll find the story, about a game between the Washington Senators and New York Yankees at Griffith Stadium at which Ike was in attendance. The hometown team singled with a man on second, who barreled toward the plate as the throw came in from the outfield. Yogi Berra applied the tag and Flaherty rang him up. A moment later came Ike's booming cry. "NO!!"

As the story goes, the President met Flaherty in the clubhouse after the game and presented him this autographed OAL (Harridge) ball in the interest of diplomatic relations. When asked later by reporters if Ike's opinion had inspired him to reconsider, Flaherty stuck to his guns. "No," he said. "It wasn't even close."

The ball has taken on a tobacco hue over the passing half century, and the leather is crazed, but the ink remains quite bold nonetheless, retaining an 8/10 strength. It's one of just a handful of Eisenhower singles known in the hobby, and unquestionably the one with the best back story. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
