1948 St. Louis Browns Team Signed Baseball with Blackie Schwamb. Blackie Schwamb's life had all the elements of a great book and a doomed baseball career. And it achieved both.
Yes, he was incredibly talented -- standing 6-5 with a fastball approaching 100 mph and a nasty curve. But his drinking binges, wild temper, undisciplined nature, and ties to organized crime signaled that it was just a matter of time before his world would crumble.

Despite a troubled childhood, Schwamb somehow found himself in the minors at twenty and the majors at twenty-one, as a promising pitcher for the St. Louis Browns. Then a murder conviction sent him to the "big house" for a decade where he racked up seventy wins and 720 K's while playing for the San Quentin All-Stars and Folsom State Prison. Major and minor league players regularly came to get a chance to play against the legendary prison pitcher. And in one contest, he threw a perfect game against a team with five major leaguers. In 2005, a book was written about his life called "Wrong Side of the Wall."

The 1948 St. Louis Browns team signed baseball on offer here is one of only two such exemplars that we know of which bears the signature of Blackie Schwamb, who appears on a side panel in 8.5/10 ink. The ball is off-white, the OAL (Harridge) stamping has faded a bit, and the twenty-one signatures are an overall 9/10. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
